Pier 62 Carousel Pavilion

Project by CDR Studio (Project Manager: Anke Roggenbuck)

The Hudson River Park Carousel pavilion on Pier 62 in New York City is an architectural component of a landscape design for 8 acres of public park along the Hudson River.  Pier 62 defines the southern edge of this segment of the park directly north of Chelsea Piers.  The pavilion was conceived as an elevated fragment of landscape engaging the new topography of the Lawn Bowl and curving pathways constructed on Pier 63.  Together with the concrete skate-park, it forms an edge and acts a filter between the pastoral park setting to the privately operated sports recreation spaces of Chelsea Piers.

The green shed roof opens to the north and provides cover for the carousel from direct sunlight heightening the drama of the carousel colors and lights.  It also provides shelter for general use beyond the operation of the carousel itself.  This roof orientation effectively engages the pier, the lawn and the pathways to the north.  The wood decking of the pier extends along the ground into the pavilion thus enforcing a material continuity between the pavilion and pier.
